In order to avoid touching the delicate Torah scroll parchment, the Reader uses a Pointer, also known as Yad (Hand) due to the outstretched finger image used for pointing. If a bar mitzvah boy, or anyone else called for the Reading from the Torah, he can ask for the Reader to use his Pointer.
